Previously On Martinez Yoga…
Gosh, teaching kids school based yoga programs really keeps me on my toes. I have to focus and pay attention like crazy when I’m with them. I teach a lot kids in NYC, ages four to ten, and I can’t zone out. If I do for a split second, things can go cray cray. No worries though. It’s not the worst thing that can happen. I just got to gather, focus, and listen.
I recently started a new class at an elementary school, and the first two weeks are crucial. I/we set yoga guidelines to ensure a safe and nurturing space. At the beginning of every class I ring a singing bowl three times marking a beginning and to draw their attention to me. I then look at every kid and smile, but it’s not a fake smile. It’s a real smile because they’re smiling. It’s contagious.
I have a lesson plan when I teach kids. I can’t just roll in and see what happens. It doesn’t work like that. I have to plan, but I do let things unfold. It’s all about those teachable moments for that you can’t plan.
Working with kids has really helped and deepened all my teaching in general. The kids remind me to laugh and enjoy my life. That’s yoga. The first principle is to enjoy yourself. The outcome is that obstructions are removed naturally. Muchas gracias a mis niños for the gentle reminder.
